Johan,

The idea of launching rockets from U-boats originated in 1941 with a chance conversion between KORVETTEN kAPITIAN FRITZ STEINHOFF, commanding officer U-551 and his brother Doktor Ernst Steinhoff a civilian employee at the rocket plant at Peenemunde.

In 1942 tests took place using a wooden frame which carried six 30cm Wurfkorper 42 Spreng rockets. Both surface and underwater tests took place and were successful. This took place on U-511.

The V-2 idea was to tow a floating transporter/barge behind a type XXI U-boat. The barge wood be flooded until in a vertical launch position, then the rocket fired. This did not progress any further than the idea.
