The use of a solid propellant in the POLARIS weapon system precluded the
frequent disasters that the Soviets experienced with liquid propellants. Case in point, loss of K-219 off Bermuda on 10/3/1986.
I launched a POLARIS A-3 from the USS VON STEUBEN (SSBN-632) in December 1964 (sans warhead, at sea) from the Cape Canaveral area.
