Devi:
All submarines prior to the diesel-powered USS ALBACORE (SS-589) actually
surface vessels designed to submerge. Their topside decks were generally flat mainly because the deck was important as the major planing surface of the boat while performong a "rapid" or "crash" dive.
When the ALBACORE arrived on the scene with her "teardrop" hull configuration,
high submerged speeds became normal. Most all submarines today have followed
its example, with some variations of course. Had the ALBACORE design been availabe for USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571) and USS SEAWOLF (SSN-575), they
would not have used the Type XXI U-boat hull configuration. The type XXI could
not have survived the high submerged speeds of the ALBACORE. (I suspect that
I'll get some flak on this statement.)
I hope this answers your question adequately.
