Robert,
I have John Pina Craven's book and the description's of the damage done to the Nautilus were truley sobering. Interesting note on the 'Nautilus' design. If you look at her stern she looks like she has an early version of the standard 'cruciform' stern seen on all US Navy SSN's.yet has two conventional (for the time) small high sped screws. Rickover veto'ed the wishes of the designers to use a single large (efficent and quiet) screw (like the ones fitted to the scorpion class) and insisted on twin shaft, twin screw propulsion for reliability.
