Hi John,
Earlier in the war torpedoes (not only fuel) were transferred at sea from one boat (perhaps damaged and returning to base) to another by maens of rubber dinghy. Receiving boat would dive just enought to let the dinghy float atop the foredeck, then surface fully and take the torp down the hatch. These transfers were discontinued, when Allied air superiority was established.
Never heard trimming the boat to decks awash in anticipation of a crash dive. This way one adds disproportionally to wave resistance, without gaining time to dive. Aside from the backpressure of the exhaust. Rgds, RB
