Rodney, Ken, et al:

A similar passage appears in Alfred A. Knopf's 1975 edition of DAS BOOT on page 301. "Praise the Lord with trumpets and cymbals............" And later, "A smear of Vaseline and straight into the crack." Later on, "The First Watch Officer appears to check the time."

On page 364 and page 365 of Cassel's 1999 edition of DAS BOOT, the same passage appears.

I don't have a copy of DAS BOOT by J. Maxwell Brownjohn, but would
like to obtain a copy.

Are these the "floating pistons" installed behind the torpedo?

I still believe that all the U-boat tubes had at least three lands in the bore, but so far have seen only a single picture of this., and it's of a
Type XXI torpedo tube.
