When the "cold war" raised its ugly head, it was deemed necessary to modify the U.S. fleet boats, patterned after the U-boat
installation. The USS IREX (SS-482) had the first Snorkle installed in 1945.
The Soviet submarine navy experienced difficulties with their first
Snorkle installations, but overcame them finally.
Are you aware that U.S. nuclear-powered subs still use the Snorkle?
