Hi Robert,
You apparently were quoting someone on the pros and cons of the snorkel. I think he was reaching a bit when quoting the negatives. 1) taking a bit of deck casing away is by no means valuable space. 2) added weight and cost - really not primary factors in warship design 3)hard on engines and crew - if they survive, they would gladly take a few hardships in stride. Engine wear was not much of a consideration, when the average life span of the boat was 1.5 patrols, 0.? patrols without the snorkel. 4) reduced efficiency compared to surface cruising - he might have a point here, but ofc failed to mention, that the boats would be killed on the suface, which was the reason for the snorkel in the first place.
If this was official USN thought, my previous statement is corroborated. At least the could have mentioned, that a boat is deaf and dumb while snorting and vulnerable to detection because of generated noise. Ofc the Germans did not know in 1943 that Allied ACradar could make out a snorkel head on the surface in calm weather. Rgds, RB
