Here is another stat for consideration: according to Gerhard Weinbeg, US submarines sank one MILLION more tons of Japanese warships, than were sunk by any other means. (E.g. aircraft, surface vessels.) Also, if I am not wrong, in sinking the Japanese supercarrier Zokaku (sp?) a US sub sunk the biggest Japanese ship of the war. (I believe the Yamato--sunk by carrier-borne US aircraft--had a slightly lower displacement.)
