Submarines docked side by side utilize camels (floating logs) and fenders to prevent damage while alongside one another. In addition, pipe frames are added to the hull to prevent damage to screws and dive planes.
Finally, look at an overhead view of a submarine and it will be apparent that the hull is fatter amidships. Laying down a straightedge should result in the outer ends of the dive planes being inside the line.
Despite all of this and folding dive planes, nothing has been made sailor proof.
