Glad my original question has attracted some interesting response.
The amount of men that lost their lives when HMS Birdlip was attacked by U-547 on 13/6/44 was 36. I have the full official list of names with details of rank and Commemorative information.
If you then consider the 15 survivors, HMS Birdlip would at that time have exceeded her usual compliment of 35!
I am in contact with a telegraphist who was once with Birdlip, but by chance, was given shore leave just before she set of to escort S.S. Saint Basile. He has told me that it wasn't unusual for the larger armed trawlers to at times have extra crewmen on board.
The RNVR officer who trekked through the jungle was Sub-Lieut Robin Krohn RNVR Pooley,
Career:
01.1944 - 13.06.1944 HMS Birdlip
(07.1945) HMS President (Admiralty, London)
(04.1946) HMS Annet (armed trawler
I have Pooley's and some of the other survivors statements from the Board Of Enquiry plus a host of other information. I am always looking for info on HMS Birdlip so if anyone has anything no matter how small it will be welcome.
There is also a link on the home page of my web site entitled 'HMS Birdlip 60 years on'
