The "finch" depicted on the badge of the Sussex is actually a "Martlet", a non-existent heraldic bird, based loosely on a martin. It is from the coat of arms of the county of Sussex.
HMS Nutchatch was a Naval Air station at Anthorn, Cumberland - its' badge depicted the bird of that name.
