Alan:
U.S. freighter SAM HOUSTON is torpedoed, shelled and sank by
German submarine U-203 at 19-21N, 62-22W on 6/28/42. U-203
briefly embarks the freighter's master for questioning but returns him to a lifeboat before departing.
On 6/30/42, coastal minesweeper COURIER (AMC-72) rescues 30
merchant seaman (four wounded men have perished in the lifeboats) and the nine-man Armed Guard. One crewman dies of wounds subsequently.
Hope this helps,
ROBERT M.
