Frank,
The following is an extract from my book.
Port Said To Suez
It was a very early start on the 15th March 1946 and at 0445 the hands were preparing the ship for sea. The anchor was aweigh at 0600, and at 0620 HMS Queen entered the Suez canal – courses and speeds as requisite. Speed through different sections of the canal varied from 16 knots in the Great Bitter Lake to 6 or 8 knots elsewhere. The passage of the canal took eleven hours and the ship anchored in Suez Bay at 1712. At 2105 the anchor was aweigh and the ship made its way southwards through the Red Sea.
Suez To Aden
The Red Sea is quite a narrow seaway with well defined shipping lanes, and as HMS Queen sailed along she met several ships heading northwards; these were: - HMS Undine, HMS Tenacious, HMS Sussex, HMS Loch Kallistart and HMS Loch Ruthven.
Regards,
Dave
