As Brian V correctly points out we indeed don't state the definate cause of loss for USS Pompano.

I howevers disagree with Brian V. that Pompano could have had anything to do with the sinking of the Taiko Maru.
Taiko Maru was sunk to the WEST of Tsugaru Kaikyo it is far more likely that this ship was sunk by USS Wahoo (if not mined).
USS Pompano was ordered to patrol of the EAST coast of Honshu, to sink Taiko Maru she would have to pass the Tsugaru Kaikyo, this could not have been the case as it would have been suicide to undertake such a mission (Pompano also had no orders to do so).
I think Pompano therefore has nothing to do with the sinking of the Taiko Maru on the 25th.

Only the discovery of the wreck will solve this mistery for good,
