Frank,

The reason for the confusion about the identity of the Vanessa is actually quite straightforward. There originally was an armed yacht named Vanessa. Eventually, the Royal Navy also assigned the name to a new destroyer under construction, so the armed yacht was renamed Vanessa II. I have no idea why a brand new destroyer would be working with local patrol forces, so I think it's safe to assume the Vanessa II was involved.

The problem with presuming that UB 107 escaped damaged from the depth charge attack and then foundered off Flamborough Head is that this leaves unexplain how the John Retting and Chloris were sunk.

There's probably something at the PRO on this that would include the vessels names and possible the skippers. This is especially true if prize money were awarded.

Research on this incident is continuing. In fact, some extremely important additional information is coming to light which might change our whole understanding of the situation...
