Bruce,

There were really only two main types of deck guns used on German submarines in WWI (U-cruisers excepted), a short-barreled 88mm and a long barreled 105mm.
8,8cm/30 (actually 27.1 caliber), firing a 22 lb shell with a muzzle velocity of 1,935 feet per second at 59°F, range 9,000 yards at 20° elevation.
10,5cm/45 (actually 43 caliber), firing a 38.4 lb shell with a muzzle velocity of 2,133 feet per second at 59°F, range 12,600 yards at 30° elevation.

A 5 cm gun was used on some UBIIs in early 1916; these vessels were upgunned to the 8,8 cm in about October 1916.

The Kaiserliche Marine did not ordinarilly use a 37mm gun though a few of the UBI and UCI in teh Black Sea were fitted with captured British 37mms.

The U-cruisers and similar concepts mounted a 15 cm gun (42.2 caliber, 99.9 pound shell, 2231 fs muzzle velocity)

Hope this helps,

Michael
