Hi Brian
You are right about Ryton striking a submerged object. When U39 attacked submerged, they observed the periscope from Ryton. They headed the periscope and hit the tower of U39 and pressed her down to 18 meters. There was damage on the periscope and deckgun, but no damage on the pressurehull. After the incident U39 headed for home.
