I have these records of U.S. ships lost between February 1, 1917 and April 4, 1917. These losses served as the official “overt acts†or casus belli for U.S. declaration of war against Germany. My queries are these: are there any reliable data that cast doubt on the assignment of the cause of sinking in any episode?
Can the two question marks in the list be answered? In case of any further information, a source would be appreciated.
Michael, thank you very much for the information on the minefield that sank Healdton! Very much appreciated!
Ship Date Cause
Housatonic Feb 3 U-53, Rose
Lyman M. Law Feb 12 U-35, Von Arnauld
Algonquin Mar 12 U-62, Hashagen
Vigilancia Mar 16 U-70, Wunsche
City of Memphis Mar 17 UC type ?
Illinois Mar 17 UC-21, Saltzwedel
Healdton Mar 21 mine, British
Aztec Apr 1 mine, unk.?
Marguerite Apr 4 U-35, Von Arnauld
