Hi Clive, I was pleased to see a recent post on this thread as while sorting through a box of old family papers, I have come across a 2 page unsigned typed report on the sinking of SS WILLOW BRANCH on April 25th, 1918, which does not show any of the men's names but is clearly written by a survivor and was given to an Admiral at the British Consul's office in Dakar on May 22nd. It does mention giving the Admiral a "full report" and that the document I have is the original "statement" which was copied by the Admiral and returned to him.
I have no idea of my family's connection to this. The report mentions another survivor described as "the blackman" who travelled with my author from Dakar on HMS Arcoma (?) and who continued on that ship bound for Sierra Leone when my author departed for England on HMS Hildenbrand.
Do you have sufficient info from this to conclude that my author is your Charles? I would be happy to swap scanned copies by email if you wish. Best wishes.Steve
