My grandfather was on a French cargo ship that was engaged in a surface battle with an unknown u-boat.
According to my granfather's notes, they had left the straights of Gibraltar and were heading NW (perhaps on their way to Cardiff) when they were chased by a u-boat. they engaged with it using the one gun placed on their ship, the Aube, owned and operated bt CGT. The captain and the engineer on the Aube were both awarded "Croix de Geurre" for their efforts.
I would love to identify which u-boat this may have been. Any information would be greatly appreciated
