Oliver,
Thanks for this information, I am amazed at the detail you have of the event. But, a few more questions please.
Why would U-39 engage on the surface with guns and not have torpedod the Aube?
My grandfather's brief notes stated they saw the sub to the stern, chasing them, were the U-Boats much slower under water rather than on the surface?
How close would they have been to engage with their guns? The Aube was fitted with one gun, but I do not know the deatils
