Hello guys,
if the ALMERIAN fell victim to a mine laid by U 73 then the responsible commander was Carl Bünte, not Fritz Saupe. U 73 laid her last mine barrages in August 1918.
The mines in question were laid off Empedocle (South coast of Sicily). But I have a problem with this claim because the ALMERIAN went down near Licata, abt. 15-20 miles SE of Empedocle. Was she heading for Licata after being hit?
Best wishes,
Simon
