Re UB 39 WWI. I have a pair of German WWI binoculars which my late father picked up near the Kiel Canal in WWII. They were in a pile of 'booty' which was being guarded, but which solders could help themselves to with a payment of cigarettes.
There's an inscription on the binoculars which, loosely translated with google translate (not very accurate), reads "
In recognition of the rescue by the Team the steamer 'Harald' benevolent death-defying sacrifice
dedicated from Board of The Sea - professional agent officiation
Looking at the website, I can't see why anyone would be gifted inscribed binoculars with a mention of SS Harald - particularly when that wasn't the only ship destroyed that day (3rd December 1916 or 30 November 1916), commander was Heinrich Kustner. Does anyone know if there was anything special about the sinking of the Harald - was the crew rescued? I had assumed from the 0 record that everyone had perished. Does anyone have any information?
Many thanks
Sandra Gee
