<HTML>`cos they radioed a distress signal in most cases cntaining name, cause of sinking.for sub attack they radioed for ex.: SSS (3 times S for submarine).the subcaptain usually intecepted this message and looked up the "Weyher" a collection of all contemporary ships,thus knowing the tonnage and other info.
if the sub was not able to intercept,this was done by german radio intelligence scanning the waves.</HTML>
