<HTML>Little correction:
The "Weyer" was the German counterpart to Jane's "All fighting ships".
Warships from all nations were listed in this books with technical informations and side views of the main types.

The reference book for the Kriegsmarine about the merchant ships was written by Erich Gröner, therefore short called "Gröner" with many infos about tonnage, owner, side views and so on.

The identification was done on different ways:
1. interception of radio signals, done by the U-boat itself or by the xB-Dienst (radio intelligence service)
2. questioning the survivors, usually only by unescorted ships
3. comparing the silhouettes with the Gröner
4. reading the name on the ships
5. through newspapers, early in the war the sinkings were announced in the papers. The names of American ships were still published in In the USA until mid 1942.

I estimate that every fourth ship sunk until late 1942 was identified.</HTML>
