<HTML>Mr. Blair is one of those people who considers a glass filled to 50% of capacity as half empty. He makes some valid points about the real 1945 vintage XXI, however, he makes no comments about the concept or how much better the Germans could have executed that concept in more quiet times. One must consider the XXI was built at a time the bombs were raining down on German industry and there was a major shortage of skilled labor. The ill conceived hydraulic system is just one symptom of this situation. Considering the conditions under which the XXI was built, it was not a bad U-boat. His comment about comparing US submarines of the 1950s and 60s with the 1945 XXI is ridiculous, especially since the basic technology was copied from the XXI. If the Germans had had 10 years of Cold War conditions to develop this concept, they would have won the Battle of the Atlantic

Poor structural integrity is a bum rap since the XXI could operate at 200 meters. However, it did not live up to its design expectations for various reasons having to do with the conditions under which it was built. The underpowered Diesel engine was also a symptom of a hurried development. The engines were turbo charged, but air pressure losses in the snorkel system prevented full power from being achieved. The imperfect snorkel is a farcical critique. The Germans only started to work on snorkels in 1943. If someone had listened to Prof. Walter in 1933 when he first proposed the snorkel, things would have been quite different. The hydraulic system fiasco was due to a shortage of electric motors in 1943. The shipyards had no experience with hydraulic systems in U-boats and were expected to learn this trade overnight, along with section assembly.
