<HTML>U-27 had stopped the steamer Nicosian and was about to sink her(with her cargo of mules) and was unaware of the British Q-Ship Baralong(Lt-Cdr Godfrey Herbert RN) approaching.Baralong kept Nicosian between herself and the Submarine so that when they came within visual range of the Sub the range was less than 600 yards.Baralong engaged and fired 34 rounds which quickly disposed of the sub.About a dozen survivors reached the Nicosian.Fearful they would try to sink the ship'Herbert ordered Royal Marines to open fire killing several as they climbed the rails.Four did manage to reach the ship and vanished inside. However a baording party sent over from Baralong tracked them down to the engine room where they were shot
The British placed an embargo over repoting the affair'but when some of Nicosians American passengers returned home the details were revealed. The German goverment was outraged and demanded the Baralongs crew be tried for murder-which the British of course rejected. However Herbert spent the rest of his life in fear of German reprisals. On another note the American goverment was concerned to know that Baralong had worn the Stars and Stripes during the approach and had not lowered the colours till after the U-Boat was engaged.</HTML>
