<HTML>hi rainer...playing the source of wisdom again:-)
this reply of you is ill resarched as i am not youngish.
read the whole text about it published here in uboat net.
i found it written with an remarkable insight into legal strategics.i cant say anything but: read it.if you8 cant read dont blame other people.in this essay it became quite clear that he had no intention to fire on human beings.he WANTED and that is clear- to sink every parts of the ships that could tell planes that he was in the area.this included liferafts. there is a difference between humans and liferafts.i suppose you agree on this.and the american colonel made a hubblebubble about this schiffstrümmer/schiffsbrüchige issue and succeeded in planting in everybodys opinion, that eck meant the human beings instead the of the schiffstrümmer.
but this was not the starting point of the thread.the point is,that this baralong/eck case is one more example of victors justice.we can talk here about the us slaughter of japanese in the bismarck-sea,too.there anything was considered a just target: any ship in the water and any shipwrecked human beings in the water.and we dont speak here about 10 japanese or 100 japanese.we speak about several 1000s.and no us citizen was ever punished for this.
so if you consider eck as a black mark- he more that whitewashed himself by being shot for this where other allied citizens got away with and even sacked decorations and promotions. i am not reinventing history here, but it seems that you dont want to hear uncomfortable truths?</HTML>
