I suspect his brain was of the average, human variety. It was probably quite similar to the brain of Heinz Eck.
My opinion, for what it's worth, is that those of us who have never been faced with the demands of making snap decisions under the duress of combat can't be completely sure how we'd react.
I'm not suggesting that Herbert didn't make grevious mistakes, or that he should not have been held accountable for his actions. I am suggesting that otherwise rational, intelligent, human beings can demonstrate very poor judgement in certain situations. Examples of such are part of the fabric of war, and often the only difference between war criminals and a heroes are the flag they fight under.
