I've heard this story of the sinking of U 569 a few times in the past.
It is another sad story of unarmed men being shot in the water by
enemy aircraft at the time.

When this U-boat was sinking the crew began to abandon ship in
the cold and very heavy seas and a newly-arrived destroyer named
HMCS St Laurent prepared to send a party to oboard her.
However, the Chief Engineer of U 569 opened the sea- valves inside
the U-boat to scuttled her before the enemy could board her.
She was in fact the first U-boat to be sunk by an aircraft from an
escort carrier (USS Bogue)
21 crew members of U 569 were killed & lost the commander and
24 others were pick up and made PoW's.
