<HTML>Hello J. T.:
In June 1944 I was well into my second year as a POW. So, all I know about much of the war is what I read when I came home. And I have read volumes! There are detailed accounts of that action, even, I believe, a book.
If you would take the time to search around the 'net and your public library you may find much information.
For example, Capt. Gallery was not "decorated" for the capture of the U-505. He nearly lost his job! Because the capture of the U-505 occurred shortly before the Normandy invasion, the Allied command went apoplectic! Knowledge by the Germans of the U-505's capture would have caused them to change their Enigma settings resulting in an intelligence blackout to the Allies. Fortunately, the capture of the U-505 went unrevealed.
As for the United States Navy, it seems to be well known that Gallery was looking to capture a U-boat. Back in the United States he had trained a young officer and
several sailors on submarine layouts, and had a boarding party ready if the occasion arose. It did, and his men prevented the u-boat from sinking. Apparently no one in the United States Navy command knew of Gallery's ambition!
Cordially.
