Hi again, Gummi -
Yes indeed; your `Archiv pages` as they are give an excellent outline of what`s there, but not a lot of detail. What they do not at the moment tell me, is, supposing I wanted to research U-XXX, what documents I would have access to: are there other letters and documents beside the KTBs: if so, what: is there a full set of crew lists, or are some missing; and are there photos in the Archiv relating to U-XXX ?
Presumably the Archiv has some sort of general database of this sort on its own computer (? - no idea !); I don`t know how feasible it would be to transfer it to u-boat.net, if the Archiv were prepared to allow it ? For anyone wanting to do any research using primary materials rather than secondary, it would be a tremendous help to have access to this sort of information, and make it clear at a glance whether it would be worth making a trip to Cuxhaven or not.
One might end up with quite a small catalogue for each boat - perhaps something along the lines of :-
(eg) \"U-XXX.
KTBs (German only) for all patrols except May-June `44.
KTB (English translation) June-Sept 1943
All crewlists, except first three patrols.
Navigator`s logs 1943 March - Sept only
Letters from FdU to Captain, dated 6.3.44 and 8.7.44
Photos: of launch, and relating to two patrols 12.3.43 - 25.6.43.
14 Miscellaneous PK photos of Captain and crew, from 42 - 45.
Press-cutting relating to U-XXX from Frankfurter Zeitung 1983\".
I am guessing wildly about what a `file` on a particular boat might contain !
(Of course all other details of boat and Captain are already on your site to refer to.)
This is only a suggestion of a way in which it might be possible to increase the scope of your site without adding hugely to your workload or the expense of running it all :-) But, granted, the assumption is that such a database already exists........
(Incidentally, for what it`s worth, I`d happily pay for access to that information. It might also stimulate more folks to sign up as Archiv members, once they knew what was there.)
Best wishes
Frank
