<HTML>VP-63 "MAD CATS", a U.S. Navy PBY (Catalina) squadron, was equipped with retro-firing bombs that exploded on contact. This was part of a comprehensive weapons system using MAD (Magnetic Airborne Detection, renamed Magnetic Anamoly Detection) to detect submerged targets and retro-firing smoke flares to mark its track. It was the the world's first airborne integrated weapons system.
U 761, 392, 731 and 1107 all fell victim to VP-63's retro-bombs. The first three sinkings took place in the Strait of Gibraltar and were shared with Royal Navy surface vessels, while the fourth was sunk singly by the squadron off Brest.
