<HTML>One of the most important uses of technology against the U-boat was the H2S radar system, which provided a PPI image of the terrain beneath the aeroplane. Unfortunately, a decision was made to supply new H2S sets to RAF Bomber Command before supplyin them to RAF Coastal Command, which meant that the Germans might retrieve H2S equipment from a downed bomber, realise that it could be used against U-boats, and install sensors which would enable the U-boats to be made aware of the presence of a H2S aeroplane. To overcome this possibility, British scientific intelligence came up with a plan to make the Germans think that their increased success-rate agains U-boats was thanks to new infra-red technology, and not radar (or Enigma decodes). This appeared to have worked, because the Germans started to coat their black-painted submarines with a semi-transparent glass-like coating. This had the effect of making the submarine appear grey (against a grey sea) to the eye, but (thanks to the refractive index of the coating) allowed infra-red to pass through the coating and be abosorbed by the black paint, thus appearing (to the infrared detector) as a black submarine on a black background!</HTML>
