No I do not think, I misunderstood my grandfather war history. (not my father as you put it).
Yes the NSDAP did tried to keep out of religious affairs, but this was not always the case. However, it is true as YOU say, there were generally no hinderance towards the civilain population or those who wearr a uniform to attend religious services. But caution was needed, as the jewish and some other cults were "ban"
in Germany around that time.
