I can't remember just where I found it, but years ago one reference said either of them was worth $250,000 and a Knight's Cross for any commander who managed to sink one. It would have had to have been pure luck to accomplish it, though -- both of them were just about as fast as a standard torpedo. That's why they never sailed in convoy. Just the liner and its own escorts, which were no doubt pinging away but really wouldn't have been able to hear anything.
