<HTML>The ballast tanks are not always open at the bottom, at least not the internal tank (tank 3 in a type VII). To flood tank 3 you have to open both the air vents at the top and the valves at the bottom. I don&#8217;t now about the external tanks, but I have always thought that they had valves in the bottom to&#8230;?

As for Parade&#8217;s comment, I would say he is right. As long as the tanks are open to the sea somewhere the pressure inside the tank will be the same as the pressure outside. Thus they will not be crushed even if air is trapped inside. The air however will be compressed causing the problems he described.
