<HTML>I have read Dr R Ballard's account of how his team discovered the remains of Titanic and Bismarck. As far as I can ascertain, he never takes anything from the wreck site except photographs and in most cases leaves a memorial plaque, as did the team that discovered HMS Hood last year.
Titanic, however, has been raided for artefacts on 7vral occasions, the crows nest on the main mast was destroyed by salvors retrieving the bell from inside. A couple recently descended by submersible to the deck, where they held their wedding. I consider that to be tacky, disrepectful and a bit tasteless, but it's their money I suppose, and money talks.
Ballard once said he would like to see the establishment of a Museum of the Sea, wherein people could find out more abot the history of these famous vessels and see them in situ.
The policy of museums is Look but don't touch, and I think this should apply to the oceans museums as well.</HTML>
