Oliver, yes - this (sort of) fits Arthur W. Seawall. She left Freetown for Trinidad on August 1 and was in convoy until Aug. 6-1942. Torpedoed by Bleichrodt on August 7, sank the next day. But it could also fit the gunner's description of events on Breñas (except for dates). He says he heard 2 shots in the morning of the 6th, then spotted a U-boat to port aft, about 2000 meters away. U-boat continued to fire. Captain says he quickly altered course, gunner fired 32 shots, tall column of water was seen, boat submerged - nothing further happened until that evening when Breñas was torpedoed, hit on the port side between No. 3 and 4 holds. She listed heavily, sank in 10 minutes.
