<HTML>I read somewhere that the hulls of u-boats, especially those that could operate at about 150-200 meters depth, were made of a low-alloy steel containing about 2.5-3.0% Ni, with small(less than about 0.5%) easch of Cr, Mn, Mo, and Si.C content of these steels would have to have been limited to less than about 0.15%, to avoid welding-induced embrittlement. A derivative of this steel, called \"HY-80\"(for its room-temperature yield strength of at least 80,000 psi) wasa developed in the U.S.A. shortly-after WWII, and is now the hull-material of almost all U.S. subs.

I can post additional information if desired.</HTML>
