Hmmm, a big question you have asked for..! I will be short on this
one, because maybe someone else can give you a better answer..?
There was a series of suggestions & requests made by U-boat
Captains to Naval U-Boat Command on the early VII B Types U-boats
in the second half of 1942, as the enemy had gained the upper hand
with coastal aircrafts. U-Boat Command did set out a task urgently
to accelerating improvements in armament (A/A guns) to the VII B
Type U-boats and too others to suit the operation the boat was reqired
to patrol Many suggestions were made to where the A/A\'s guns
be fitted at the docks. So appropriate location was made to suit the
Captain and his crew.
