<HTML>Probably I\'m not nautical enough and don\'t understand your question (being a former Army man myself).
But I can say each of these designations are of course 90 degree increments:
N ---- 0 or 360 degrees
E ---- 90 degrees
S ---- 180 degrees
W ---- 270 degrees
These fall between the above bearings in order, and would be 45 degrees more than the N, E, S, and W bearings:
NE
SE
SW
NW
Then there is another bearing between the others, so each is 22-1/2 degrees greater in turn...so the final 16-point compass going clockwise from N would be....
North ---- 0 or 360
NNE ---- 22-1/2
NE ---- 45
ENE ---- 67-1/2
East ---- etc....
ESE
SE
SSE
South
SSW
SW
WSW
West
WNW
NW ---- 315
NNW ---- 337-1/2
(and then back at N again)
Does this come close to what you were asking, or is this the infantry compass....and has nothing to do with your question???
Best,
