In July 1943, Grd Amb Doenitz made the first mention to Hitler of
a startling new project, the so-called Electro-submarine. Known as
the Type XXI boat. The Allied also knew about these new boats in 1943,
and started heavy bombing of shipyards to hold up production of
these new submarines. As a result only 4 Type XXI boats had been
completed when Germany was ordered to surrender by Doenitz in
May, 1945. After the war the captured XXI boats at the shipyards
at Blohn & Voss in Hamburg gave the Allied new information about
there designs & operations of these new submarines, because little
was known about the advance designs nor about the Walter turine
engine at the time.
