There was great affection for the canary in our small coal mining community. Tunneling units my Grandfather served in on the Western Front (WW1) certainly appreciated them. However Re. Don Bakers post above and others futher down, crewmen, especially in early schnorkel days, fought on in very toxic and highly elevated atmospheres far beyond the conscious threshold of the canary. How so many (crewmen) lived on to old age is quite remarkable if not medically puzzling.
However, an interesting thought.
