I dont know your source for the Royal Navy but according to the Daily Mail of Wednesday 31.1.01. (a couple of quotes)

\"The largest and most powerful attack submarine ever commissioned by the Royal Navy begins construction today......

A keel-laying ceremony today at barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria will mark the start of construction on Astute - as well as the centenary of the Navy\'s first submarine which entered service in 1901.\"
