...no \'P\' contest meant or implied! I was just noting that the Royal Navy\'s submarine service was not the world\'s oldest. I was very careful in wording my posting because I am not sure who might be able to lay claim to the oldest. However, I do know that the U.S. Navy\'s submarine service is officially one year older than that of the RN.
The USS Holland entered service in the US Navy in April 1900. The RN\'s Holland 1 entered service just about a year later.
As for the oldest.....now we can get into interesting (and non U-boat forum) discussions about who has the oldest. There are both the Confederate and the US Navy during the American Civil War (Hunley and Alligator), France with the Fulton Nautilus in the early-to-mid 1800\'s. There\'s even the Bushnell Turtle during that little colonial uprising on this side of the pond.
