Dear Brian,
If you want, look up the boat and its commander on the site here, and I shall endeavour to send you material per e-mail, in particular the relevant page out of the boat's logbook and the corespondence exchanged years later between another survivor and the U-Boat commander.
I simply hope this can help your dad, because it's seen from the other side of the fence, so to speak. Do you read German at all, because there's an interesting contemporary article about the sinking, as well.
