Thankyou Joe and Rainer for your comments.You could both be correct in your assumption about the schnorkell.Moving aft towards the
conning tower it is obvious that time has also taken its toll on the wreck.Obviously all the wood has rotted away and the casing has deteriorated so much in places
that it looks wafer thin.All the casing at the conning tower has gone and part of it lies a few feet away to starboard on the sandy bottom.For want of a better word the \"stumps \" of the periscope housing etc, are clearly visible as are most of the other apparatus that were situated in this area.The deck around the hatch to the conning compartment is gone as is the hatch which must have been blown off during the attack.Upon peering inside the conning compartment the diver must have disturbed an eel or something as the sediment within this area is seen to be disturbed into a thick murky cloud.Through this greeny brown fog can be seen the hatch cover for entry into the control room.This hatch ,however , is sealed as far as we know but as we will never touch or enter U297 we will never know for certain.
On looking aft from this position one can see that the whole wintergarten and lower gun platform have been wrenched off and it lies in a tangled mess on the seabed to starboard.The guns lie seperated from the wreckage not far from the main wreck.Part three of the story will follow soon.
