Hi Louie et al,
The DK (iG or iS) was NOT awarded for anything like 'long-time (or lucky) survival' on a boat. It was invariably awarded for an individual acchievement or act of heroism etc. Thus I suspect your deduction as not factual. Typical medals for individuals and their contribution to group (boat) success and longevity were Uboat- Abzeichen, EK 2+1.
